Common sleep complaints
People may struggle to fall asleep, wake repeatedly, rise too early, sleep at irregular times, or feel unrefreshed despite enough hours in bed. Others sleep too much or become dangerously sleepy in the daytime. Stress, depression, anxiety, mania, pain, breathing disorders, restless legs, substances and medicines can all affect sleep.
When assessment is important
Seek help when the problem lasts, affects work or study, causes irritability or low mood, or leads to dozing while driving. Loud snoring with choking or pauses in breathing needs medical assessment. Very little sleep together with unusually high energy, fast speech or risky behaviour may suggest mania and should be assessed promptly.
What treatment can include
Treatment depends on the cause. A clinician may review sleep habits and health, use a sleep diary, adjust contributing medicines, treat a mental-health condition or refer for a sleep study. Behavioural treatment for insomnia and consistent sleep timing can be useful. Sleeping tablets are not the right answer for every problem and can cause dependence or daytime impairment.
Safer everyday sleep habits
Keep wake time consistent, create a wind-down routine, limit late caffeine and alcohol, and use the bed mainly for sleep. Get daylight and activity during the day. If sleepy, do not drive or operate machinery. These habits support care but do not replace assessment for ongoing symptoms.
Preparing for a consultation
A clear history helps the doctor understand what has changed and what support may be appropriate. If possible, bring a trusted family member and:
- a two-week sleep and nap diary
- snoring, gasping or movement observations from a bed partner
- work shifts, screen use, caffeine, alcohol and tobacco timing
- all medicines and daytime sleepiness details
