A life of service, learning & humanity

## From Mansoorpur to a life across continents

Dr H N Roy’s story began in 1927 in Mansoorpur, Sarai, in Bihar. From those village roots grew a life of unusual range: medicine and public service, scholarship and music, faith and family, a journey that carried him from Bihar to England, the Isle of Wight, and the Republic of South Africa—yet always brought him home to serve.

He studied at K K Vidya Mandir in Dharhara, Sarai, and later at L S College, Muzaffarpur. In 1957 he completed his MBBS at Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), Patna. A year later he joined Tata Steel, which sent him to England for higher studies. He returned from his first visit in 1961 with DIH and DPH qualifications, and from a second visit in 1965 with a DPM.

In 1966, Dr Roy began private practice in Mansoorpur, Sarai. His career again crossed borders in 1970, when he returned to England to work with the National Health Service on the Isle of Wight. In 1975 he came back to India and established his private practice in Hajipur, Vaishali—the practice that became Dr H N Roy Mental Clinic.

Courage & public service

## A freedom fighter who chose to heal

Dr Roy was active in India’s freedom struggle. After Independence, the Government of India recognised him as a Freedom Fighter. The same sense of service shaped his medical life: wherever his work took him, he remained committed to learning, responsibility, and care.

In 1992, at an age when many would have chosen a quieter life, he travelled to the Republic of South Africa to serve as Principal Medical Officer at Komani Hospital. He returned to India in 2000 and continued his private practice until his passing in 2012.

Beyond medicine

## A curious and many-sided mind

Medicine was only one expression of Dr Roy’s curiosity. He wrote many books on a wide range of subjects and moved comfortably among languages. He could read and write Hindi, English, Urdu, and French; he also used broken Afrikaans, understood the regional dialects of Bihar, and had familiarity with several other languages.

Music was another lifelong companion. He played several instruments with great proficiency, including the tabla and harmonium. A firm believer in God—the Supreme Power manifest in and guiding all existence—he loved bringing people together for bhajan and kirtan at his home.

He also delighted in food and the discovery of new cuisines. This openness—to ideas, languages, music, faith, places, and flavours—was part of the warmth with which he met the world.

Family & remembrance

## The measure of a life

To his family, Dr Roy was far more than a distinguished doctor. He was a tremendous husband, an excellent father, the best grandfather, and an awesome great-grandfather. His professional achievements mattered, but so did the affection, guidance, humour, and sense of belonging he gave across generations.

His life joined courage with compassion, learning with faith, and public service with a deep love of family.

Dr H N Roy passed away on 12 June 2012. Every year on 12 June, people still gather in remembrance—a living sign that his influence reaches beyond the clinic that bears his name. His story continues in the memories of those he loved, the patients he served, and the community that still honours him.
